How to Prepare Your Pets for a Move

Moving to a new home can be stressful for humans and our pets. There are some things you can do to help prepare your pets for the move and alleviate some of the stress throughout the process. Here are a few tips to help make the transition easier for them.

  • If you are moving to a new town or city and will need to find a different vet, request a current copy of your pet’s vaccinations and medical records and ask your vet if they have any recommendations for vets in your new area. Familiarize yourself with state and local leash laws, pet ordinances, and pet licensing requirements.
  • Make sure to get new identification tags for your pet with your updated contact information.
  • Try to pack gradually and maintain your pet’s normal routine to minimize commotion, which may cause your pet to become anxious. If you have a cat, it can be helpful to bring out their carrier a few weeks prior to the move to help them get comfortable with it.

  • Make arrangements for your pet on moving day. If you plan to keep your pet in a quiet secluded area, display a sign that says “Do Not Disturb, Family Pet Inside” to help prevent your pet from escaping. If your pet is especially anxious, it can be helpful to take them to a boarding facility or have someone pet sit them on moving day.
