Pets and Seasonal Allergies

Fall is around the corner, which means seasonal allergies are looming. Although dogs and cats are allergic to many of the same seasonal allergens as humans, such as pollen, weeds, and mold, the symptoms they experience are different. Some of the common pet allergy symptoms include excessive scratching and licking, skin rash and irritation, hair loss, itchy or tender paws, and itchy ears and/or ear infections. If you notice any these symptoms, you should schedule a visit with your veterinarian to determine the source of the allergies as well as discuss treatment options.

If your pet suffers from seasonal allergies there are some things you can do at home to help relieve their symptoms. Vacuum your carpets and upholstery and wash your pet’s bedding weekly. Keep your windows shut during allergy season to help keep pollen and other allergens out of your house and away from your pet. Rake leaves often to minimize the spread of inhalant allergens. Bathe your pet with a specially-formulated shampoo to rinse of the allergens. If possible, try to prevent your pet from scratching their irritated skin. If your pet’s symptoms become severe, talk to your veterinarian about allergy medication options for your pet.
