National Kids and Pets Day

National Kids and Pets Day

April 26th is National Kids and Pets Day. Pets are a wonderful addition to any family and provide a great opportunity for kids to learn responsibility, cooperation and nurturing skills. Here are some things kids can do to help learn responsible pet ownership.

  • Practicing basic commands and obedience skills is a great way for kids and pets to bond and to ensure that pets respond to all family members in the household.
  • Helping with pets' mealtime allows kids to get involved and learn responsibility by scooping food and providing fresh water throughout the day. They can also help clean up pets' food and water bowls.
  • Participating in daily exercise with pets by taking them on walks and engaging in playtime which strengthens their bond.
  • Engaging in routine grooming such as brushing a pet’s coat and teeth creates good habits with children and their pets and provides quality bonding time.
  • Teaching kids how to properly clean up after their pets, such as scooping and emptying the litter box and cleaning up any messes in the grass fosters responsibility.
  • Visiting a local shelter to help walk dogs or collect food and supplies is a great way for kids to get involved and give back to their community.
