November is National Pet Diabetes Month and exists to raise awareness of pet diabetes and promote diabetes testing. Diabetes in dogs and cats is caused by an inability to process or release proper amounts of insulin, resulting in high blood glucose levels. Risk factors in pets include age and genetics. Obesity is another major risk factor. The following are some warning signs of pet diabetes:
-
Increased thirst
-
Increased urination
-
Lethargy or weakness
-
Weight loss despite increased appetite
-
Poor coat and skin condition
-
Dull, cloudy eyes
If your pet is experiencing any of the symptoms above, contact your veterinarian immediately. With the proper treatment and commitment, diabetic pets can live long, happy lives.
