What is Periodontal Disease?

What is Periodontal Disease?
In humans, our oral health plays a major role in not just our visual appearance but also our overall health and wellness and the same is true about our pets. Did you know that only 7% of dog owners brush their dog’s teeth on a daily basis? There are many reasons that pet owners do not brush their pet’s teeth, but poor dental health can lead to dental disease in as little as 2 years that can start to cause your pet pain. What is Periodontal Disease and what causes it? Periodontal disease starts with the accumulation of bacteria on the surface of the teeth that quickly turn into plaque within 1 -2 days. This buildup irritates the gums causing them to become swollen and even bleed when brushing. This is the same in humans and is referred to as gingivitis.   As this process continues without intervention, the gums become more swollen and turn a purplish-red color. Then, pockets around the teeth develop and the bones supporting the teeth begin to deteriorate, indicating periodontal disease. This is very painful for pets, particularly during chewing. Over 80% of dogs over three have dental disease! How to prevent or slow it? The key is regular removal of the plaque from the teeth to help prevent or slow the development of tartar. This may be accomplished by meticulously brushing the animal’s teeth on a regular basis (at least 3 times per week). Although this is the most effective way to prevent periodontal disease, few pet owners are willing or able to regularly brush their pet’s teeth.
